Tips for Your Maternity Session
Your maternity photo session is such a meaningful way to slow down and take it all in—this season of waiting, growing, and loving your baby before they’re even here. It’s not about perfect posing or looking a certain way. It’s about documenting this chapter honestly and beautifully, just as you are. Below are a few helpful tips to make sure your maternity session feels relaxed, personal, and true to you. And don’t forget, prior to your session I will send you a detailed style guide to help you prepare and we will also have a pre-session consultation to discuss the details.
1. Schedule Your Session at the Right Time
Most maternity sessions are scheduled between 30–34 weeks. This is usually when your belly has that beautiful, round shape, and you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience. That said, every pregnancy is different. We’ll always take your comfort, energy level, and personal situation into account when choosing the best timing for your session.

2. Choose Outfits That Make You Feel Amazing
What you wear can really help set the tone for your images. Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and neutral or earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you and your bump. Fitted gowns can also be a great option if you love a more classic, timeless look.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. If something doesn’t feel like “you,” it will likely show. I’m always happy to help with outfit suggestions or styling guidance for you—and for your partner and children as well—so everything feels cohesive without being too matchy. We will discuss outfit options in detail during our consultation. I also offer dresses and flower crowns in my mama closet should that interest you.

3. Hair and Makeup: Keep It Simple and Timeless
You don’t need anything dramatic or out of your comfort zone. A natural, polished look photographs best and helps your images feel timeless years from now. Soft hair, neutral makeup, and well-moisturized skin go a long way.
Some mamas love having professional hair and makeup done as a little treat for themselves, while others prefer doing it on their own. Either option is perfect—this session is about what makes you feel your best.
You don’t need anything over-the-top. Soft waves, natural makeup, and a little extra attention to brows and lashes go a long way on camera. Professional hair and makeup can be a great way to feel pampered, but whatever you choose, aim for a look that feels comfortable and timeless.
4. Bring Meaningful Details
Whether it’s ultrasound photos, baby shoes, or a special blanket, personal touches help tell your story. These details add emotion and make your images even more meaningful years down the road.
5. Include your partner and family
These images are a beautiful way to document the connection your family already shares and the excitement of welcoming a new baby.
For little ones, there’s no pressure for perfect smiles or cooperation. We’ll keep things relaxed and playful, allowing space for cuddles, curiosity, and those sweet, in-between moments that truly reflect your family. Some of the most meaningful images come from simply letting kids be kids.

6. Trust the Process (and Your Photographer!)
You don’t need to know how to pose or worry about what to do with your hands—I’ll guide you throughout the entire session. I’ll offer gentle direction while also leaving room for natural moments to unfold. If something feels uncomfortable or you need a break, we’ll adjust. This experience is meant to feel calm, supportive, and enjoyable.
6. Rest, Hydrate, and Be Kind to Yourself
Try to get some rest the night before, drink plenty of water, and eat a light meal before your session. Pregnancy can be unpredictable, and that’s okay. We’ll take breaks as needed and move at a pace that feels good for you. Listening to your body is always the priority.
Your maternity session is about more than photos—it’s about remembering how this season felt. The anticipation, the love, and the connection you already have with your baby and your family. These images will one day be a reminder of just how special this chapter truly was.
